Bobby Conn - Never Get Ahead
Bobby Conn (born Jeffrey Stafford) is an institution in Chicago. The city’s own David Bowie. The first song I heard from him was “Never Get Ahead” from his debut EP. In this early video, he changed the lyrics from “giving head to the man” to “saying yes to the man”. He released several excellent full-length albums afterwards. He did have one dark period where he decided to take himself and his now wife violinist/vocalist Monica Bou Bou (Julie Pomerleau) on the road with a drum machine singing Harry Nilsson songs. When he returned to Chicago, he did the right thing and brought back the full band, called them The Glass Gypsies, and released two quality records, The Homeland and King For A Day. The title track video from the latter is embedded above. It’s not my favorite song from the album but the video is great. His traditional maroon, ADIDAS jumpsuit making the trek from his very first video.
